Treasure Hunting

Antiquing

Guide

Spring 2019

Background

This book was created during my typography 3 class at Oregon State University. We were asked to select a topic or specific type of business that we could easily conduct related field research on throughout the term. I chose antiquing as my subject, more specifically, antiquing within the Willamette Valley area.

I visited and documented 8 different shops and conducted an interview with one of the shop owners (Hoodoo Antiques). The book also includes a brief history of antiquing as a practice, and a section of tips and tricks for folks who are new to the hobby.

The purpose of Treasure Hunting is to demystify the antiquing experience, to encourage younger generations to go out and explore objects from the past. Buying used is not only a more sustainable way to live, it can also be an exciting way to find unique furnishings and clothes etc. This guide explores the history and culture of antiquing, and offers some tips and tricks for getting started. So whether a reader is an Oregonian looking for their next day trip, or an antiquing novice in search of some insight, my hope is that they will find this little book useful in their next treasure hunt.
